THERAPET THURSDAY: OUR EDUCATIONAL MISSION

Part of Therapet’s mission is to spread the word to healthcare professionals and the community about the benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy.
Several of our volunteers were honored to present at the Christus Mother Frances Leadership Development Institute on January 20, 2017. They spoke about utilizing specially trained and certified therapy animals to provide therapy services with patients. A big thank you to Karen Reed and Boone, Crystal Jones and Miss Texana, Bonnie Maywhort, Joy Shea and Swagger, and Teri Crawford for making it all happen. Many smiles and snuggles were shared with the 350 attendees!

THERAPET THURSDAY – SOOTHING STUDENTS

Did you know that petting a dog can lower your heart rate and blood pressure? It can also trigger the release of the bonding hormone oxytocin. At a recent visit to a special needs classroom, Therapets Abbie (pictured) and Concho were able to help soothe students, including one student who had been anxious and hyperactive for most of the day.

THERAPET THURSDAY – NEW VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!

Spreading smiles and connecting people through the healing power of animals is something Therapet excels at! At a recent visit to Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital, a founding Therapet member who has been with the organization since 1994 volunteered with a new Therapet team. We are so thankful that our volunteers welcome all into Therapet to share a common goal!
If you are interested in helping spread health, hope and happiness in the East Texas area, please email info@therapet.org for more information. We have a volunteer orientation scheduled this evening from 6-8 pm at Green Acres Baptist Church, Lighthouse Building, room 361 and an orientation scheduled on Saturday, February 18 from 2-4 pm at our Therapet Training Center, 225 E. Amherst, Ste 200, Tyler, TX 75701.

THERAPET THURSDAY – MISTLETOE & MAGIC

It’s always wonderful to see old friends and meet new people. One of the heartwarming things to hear from the Mistletoe and Magic shoppers are stories of personal interactions and fond memories of Therapet visits. Please stop by our booth at the Junior League of Tyler’s Mistletoe and Magic at Harvey Hall in Tyler, TX! Visit with the Therapets and shop for holiday bandanas, party collars, antlers, toys and more! Our 2017 Therapet calendar is available for purchase so you will be able to see the Therapets all year long!

THERAPET THURSDAY – THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT!

THERAPET THURSDAY – MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Last Sunday, Therapet attended Partners in Community Service (PICS) at Green Acres Baptist Church. We were thrilled to hear stories about how Therapet had touched their children at Kids Kaleidoscope, to see the Therapet trading cards many of the children had collected, to hear how much it meant to people when Therapet visited their family members in the hospital, to meet a staff member from a local health care facility who shared how much the Therapet visits help their staff, and to talk with people who were interested in volunteering themselves. It was a wonderful reminder of what a difference Therapet makes! #TherapetThursday #MakingADifference

THERAPET THURSDAY – NOT ALL THERAPETS ARE DOGS

Not all Therapets are dogs.
We also have five cats and one bird in the program. In fact, Cuddles (an Umbrella Cockatoo) is always a favorite when Therapet visits the Skyview Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
During a recent visit to Skyview, our volunteers were moved to hear one resident say he had not petted an animal in over 40 years.

THERAPET THURSDAY – I DON’T CARE FOR DOGS….

Near the end of a hospital visitation one night, a nurse asked if Therapet could visit one of her patients. Wes, a Therapet volunteer, went in the room first and the nurse told the patient that she had a surprise visitor. As Wes walked his dog Jake to the other side of the bed, a man who was visiting the patient saw Jake. He immediately started petting Jake and explained to the patient that there was a dog there. The patient said that she didn’t really care for most dogs.

After the gentleman petted Jake and visited with him for awhile, he said, “I really like dogs and needed this, thank you for letting me visit with him.” The volunteer explained that Therapet visits not only for the patients, but also for the family, friends, and staff…”anyone who needs us.” As they began to leave the room, the patient calmly called Jake over and he carefully placed his paws on the edge of her bed. As she petted Jake’s head, she smiled and said, “Well, I like other people’s dogs.” Everyone, including the nurse, had smiles on their faces. ‪#‎TherapetThursday‬ ‪#‎HealingPaws‬ ‪#‎TherapyDog‬
